The CAN-DO Foundation is excited to announce the newest addition to our volunteers – Jan Schneiderman – a justice impacted woman with a stellar reputation for always making herself available to assist with a myriad of tasks and an unwavering commitment to detail oriented responsibilities.
Jan Schneiderman was born in and grew up in New York City. She is proud to have received her education in the New York City school system.
Upon graduating high school Jan initially attended SUNY at Stony Brook and transferred to the University of Pennsylvania in her sophomore year. Jan graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, summa cum laude, with a bachelor’s degree in English and a minor in Theater and Film Studies. After taking a gap year, Jan enrolled in Emory University School of Law where she earned a Juris Doctor degree.
Jan‘s first legal job was as a summer intern at the New York City office of Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts (VLA), which is a non-profit organization that provides legal representation and assistance to artists and entertainers in all areas of the arts. Thus began Jan‘s commitment to pro bono activities. Early in her career Jan was in-house counsel for a union that represented doctors and dentists in New York and New Jersey. She then opened her own private practice specializing in sports and entertainment law, family law, trusts and estates, real estate, and other civil matters.
Jan met CAN-DO Founder, Amy Povah, in 2019. From that moment Jan became active assisting CAN-DO with numerous tasks, such as reviewing legal documents, assisting interns, but her primary focus has been the drafting and filing of petitions for Executive Clemency and other post conviction remedies such as motions for sentence reductions and compassionate release. Jan currently will officially now serve as the legal advisor for the CAN-DO Foundation.
In addition to her work with CAN-DO, Jan recently returned to her undergraduate alma mater as the Supervising Attorney for the Federal Clemency Subproject of Penn Carey Law’s Decarceration Advocacy Project. We are excited that Jan has requested CAN-DO to assist in providing potential cases to Penn Law students with the goal of obtaining post conviction relief.
